Arthur J. Gallagher International has appointed Jill Hood to spearhead strategic marketing activity across its expanding direct division.

Hood, who was previously head of customer marketing with Capita Insurance Services, will work with individual business heads to boost the group’s customer base, develop tailored propositions and drive divisional synergies.

AJGI aims to ensure that marketing and focus on the customer remain central to its operations as it pursues further expansion plans following the acquisition of flat insurance specialist Deacon Insurance Services.

She brings more than 10 years’ financial services experience, the last five focused on general insurance products, having previously been senior marketing manager for Tesco Bank responsible for all general insurance lines.

As head of marketing – direct, Gallagher Insurance Solutions, Hood will report to Andrew Wallin, managing director – direct. Gallagher Insurance Solutions is AJGI’s fast-growing UK distribution arm.

Wallin said: “As a recognised expert in her field, we are delighted Jill has chosen to join Gallagher Insurance Solutions as we enter the next phase of our development.

“Recruiting someone of Jill’s calibre and experience underlines our continued investment in our direct brands, following a period of acquisition activity, and will allow us to best leverage our position.

Blackberry shares plunge after $84m first-quarter loss

The figure was better than the $518m loss for the same period last year, but much worse than analysts' forecasts.Shares in smartphone maker Blackberry have dived after it reported an $84m (£55m) loss for the three months to 1 June.

Blackberry said that it had shipped 6.8 million phones overall in its first quarter versus 7.8 million in the same three-month period last year.

"It doesn't bode well for the initial Blackberry 10 launch, particularly the Z10. But even the outlook for a second-quarter loss doesn't bode well for the Q10 either," said Brian Colello, an analyst with Morningstar.

Blackberry has been battling stiff competition in the smartphone sector, and has struggled to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung.

Daniel Ernst from Hudson Square Research said the company fell between two camps.

"They're not the high-end provider any more, they're not Apple. They're not the low-end provider, they're not Nokia. So they are in the middle and they do relatively low volumes," he said.

"It's difficult to make great margins on that kind of volume, so I would say the outlook is quite negative."

Actual Cash Value is the most common form of valuing a car by insurance companies. What this means is that after an accident they take the original value of the car when it was brand new and they then depreciate the car over time until the date of the claim. To Shovel or Not to Shovel? Here's the law in Ohio

As far as Ohio law goes, homeowners don’t have a legal obligation to shovel sidewalks due to a natural accumulation of snow and ice, but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t at least try to maintain them.


In December 1993 the Ohio Supreme Court upheld this law when a guest attempted to sue a homeowner in Franklin County for a slip and fall outside of the homeowner’s house.

In the case Brinkman v. Ross, the court ruled that you are walking at your own risk when Mother Nature calls. The case stemmed from a visit by the Brinkman’s to the home of the Ross’ in February 1989. Ms. Brinkman slipped outside the Ross home breaking her ankle. She sued her hosts in Franklin County Court of Common Pleas. The court threw out the complaint, indicating that it had long been established that Ohio homeowners are not obligated to remove natural accumulations of snow and ice.

The decision was reversed in the court of appeals, saying that if a homeowner knows of a hazardous condition and invites guests to visit, there is an obligation to at least warn them. The case then went to the Ohio Supreme Court where the judgment was overturned.

It’s up to your guests and other pedestrians to assume that due to the nature of Ohio winters, there’s always a risk of a slip or fall due to the natural accumulation of ice and snow.


Local snow removal ordinances

Local municipalities may invoke snow removal ordinances. If your city or township has an ordinance that requires residents to keep walkways free of snow and ice, then you have a responsibility to maintain your sidewalks. Some Ohio cities with snow removal ordinances levy fines for not removing snow in a timely manner while others issue warnings.

However, a local ordinance does not automatically implicate a homeowner if someone slips and falls on their uncleared property.
